The youngest of the three brothers accused of being involved in the Vorizia massacre proved to be the weak link in the police’s efforts to get on the trail of the three. The brothers are now in the hands of the police after they surrendered and were arrested; however, the youngest of the three, who is 19 years old and is serving his military service, had already called his commanding officer on Saturday and asked him for leave, citing an excuse that the police had taken away his motorbike during the house search.
When his involvement in the case was noticed, the police managed to get on his trail by tracing the phone he had used.
Thus, yesterday they found that the 19-year-old was hiding in a particular hotel. While preparing for an operation, suddenly last night the phone was switched off and the wanted man disappeared within minutes from the hotel. The police then proceeded to arrest the two owners of the hotel (father and son). At the same time, from the first moment, the police had put a person close to the 19-year-old under surveillance for the possibility of meeting him.
Eventually, the three brothers surrendered and were arrested shortly after 6 pm. They were subsequently taken to the Heraklion Police Directorate of Heraklion. Warrants had been issued against the three, and after their delivery, they were arrested. Tomorrow, they are expected to face criminal charges and subsequently request and receive a deadline from the investigating magistrate.
The three brothers include the 27-year-old owner of the house where the bomb exploded, another brother, aged 29, and the younger brother, just 19, who is a soldier. Their fourth brother is being treated under guard as he was injured in the fight, as is their cousin, who is also charged.
At the same time, the village of 500 people has 400 armed police officers in the village. Hellenic Police forces continue to search for weapons used in last Saturday’s bloody incident.
