Rama Duvadzi: The youngest First Lady in New York City history

Rama Duvadzi, 28, the wife of New York City’s newly elected mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has so far chosen to stay out of the public spotlight. Yet behind the scenes, she played a crucial role supporting her husband’s campaign

Newsroom November 5 08:07

On Tuesday, November 4, Rama Duvadzi became the youngest First Lady in the history of New York City—and the first from Generation Z—when her husband, 34-year-old Zohran Mamdani, was elected mayor of the nation’s largest and most densely populated city.

Although she largely avoided media attention during Mamdani’s one-year campaign, Rama quietly helped him build a viral presence on social media. According to CNN, the young visual artist and animator was a driving force behind the campaign, even designing his logos.

A Life Between Continents and Cultures

Duvadzi was born in Houston, Texas, to Syrian parents. Her father is a computer engineer, and her mother is a doctor. She grew up between Texas and Dubai, where her family moved when she was nine years old. From childhood, she had a passion for art and studied for a year at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Arts in Doha before transferring to the University of Richmond in Virginia to complete her degree.

After a brief return to Dubai, she moved to New York in 2021 and earned a master’s degree in illustration from the School of Visual Arts in 2024.

Art with a Message

Rama’s work focuses on Arab culture, social justice in the Middle East, and particularly women’s rights. Since 2023, she has created pieces addressing the genocide in Gaza and the civil war in Sudan.

In a 2019 interview on the podcast Tavan Studio in Conversation, she said that while she once felt proud to be American, she later realized she had “not fully assimilated” and began creating art centered on her identity and “what it means to be Syrian abroad.” Her artwork and Instagram posts show that she and Mamdani share similar political views, including on the genocide in Gaza.

A Voice for the Voiceless

In a rare interview with Yung Media last April, Rama criticized former President Trump, stating, “Seeing so many people being displaced and silenced out of fear, the only thing I can do is use my voice to speak out as much as possible about what’s happening in the U.S., Palestine, and Syria.”

How They Met and Their Life Together

The “democratic socialist” Zohran Mamdani met the dark-haired artist Rama on the dating app Hinge in 2021. Last October, they announced their engagement on Instagram, with Mamdani calling Rama the “Light of my life.”

An Accomplished First Lady

The new First Lady of the “Big Apple” has worked with prestigious publications such as The New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Vogue. She has also collaborated with Apple, Spotify, and the Tate Modern art gallery in London.
