Greek Interior Minister: We are preparing electronic voting for the 2028 local government elections

“We want to implement all the tools in order to increase participation in the electoral process,” said the Theodor Livanios

Newsroom February 1 09:41

“The process ran extremely smoothly,” said the Minister of Interior, Theodoros Livanios, referring to postal voting, which was applied in the most recent European elections, adding that the goal now is for it to be implemented in the next national elections.

The minister noted that postal voting will resolve mobility issues that were also identified during the European elections, both within Greece and abroad.

From there on, the Minister of Interior revealed that discussions have already begun so that the electronic voting process will be ready for the next local government elections in 2028.

As he said, “we are shaping the process now,” revealing that there may be a need for movement within a municipality. According to Mr. Livanios, a citizen will be able to go to a polling station in the municipality where they are located, regardless of whether they are registered there. “You will go to a polling station, where the judicial representative will verify your identity, and you will vote via a tablet in a voting booth. You will be able, for example, to vote from Agia Paraskevi for the municipality of Alexandroupoli.”

“All of this we are examining in order to implement every tool possible to increase participation in the electoral process,” said Theodoros Livanios.

Electronic voting is applied in other countries as well, such as the US, but there is an active debate on the transparency of the process and the possibility of voter fraud.
