Tsiknopempti once again signaled the start of the Carnival season in Thessaloniki this year, turning streets, neighborhoods, and squares into one large open-air celebration filled with music, the aroma of grilled meat, and a festive carnival mood.

From the early morning hours, the city center and districts such as Ladadika and Ano Poli were filled with people preparing for the festivities. Grills were set up on sidewalks and in courtyards, while butcher shops and markets saw increased traffic as residents stocked up on supplies for the traditional “tsiknisma” (meat grilling).

Costumes added a special color to the celebration. Masks, wigs, and colorful accessories dominated the streets, with employees in cafés, bars, and tavernas actively joining the festive spirit, welcoming visitors dressed in themed outfits.

As night falls, the intensity of the celebrations is expected to increase, with louder music and outdoor parties continuing late into the evening. For Thessaloniki, Tsiknopempti is not only a gastronomic custom but also a vibrant celebration marking the entry into the carnival season.
