Iran’s state television confirmed that the country’s new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, has been injured during the war.
According to The Times of Israel, during the broadcast announcing Khamenei’s assumption of leadership, the presenters stated that he is considered a “janbaz,” a term used “for individuals who have been wounded by the enemy.”
According to the Iranian state outlet, the injury occurred in the so-called “Ramadan War,” the name used by Iranian media for the current conflict.
State television did not provide further details about the circumstances or the severity of the injury.
Mojtaba Khamenei has not appeared publicly since the beginning of the war, and his elevation as the new Supreme Leader of Iran was announced overnight by state media.
However, as Sky News reports, it is not clear whether Mojtaba Khamenei’s injury refers to wounds sustained in this war, as one analyst suggested that these injuries could date back to his service during the Iran–Iraq War in the 1980s.
