Three different weather systems have been affecting Greece in recent days, according to meteorologist George Tsatrafillia. He explains that the storms are moving in from Italy, the cold air mass originates from Siberia, and African dust is also present in the atmosphere.

In a post today (19 March 2026), he warned that unsettled weather, including rain and thunderstorms, will persist at least until the weekend.

According to Tsatrafillia, four regions will be most affected by the severe weather: western Greece, the Peloponnese, Crete, and the Dodecanese, which are expected to receive the highest rainfall through Friday. Conditions are expected to improve from that point onward.

The Greek islands, particularly in the south and southeast, will experience the most intense weather phenomena.

As for temperatures, the cold is expected to peak on Friday, before gradually easing over the weekend.

The ongoing bad weather is not only bringing lower temperatures but also widespread rain and snowfall across much of the country, according to today’s forecast by meteorologist Theodoros Kolydas.

How the weather will evolve

Thursday, 19 March:
Rain and storms will mainly affect the Ionian Sea, the Peloponnese, and gradually western Crete. In the southern Ionian and western Peloponnese, conditions may become locally intense, with thunderstorms.

Friday, 20 March:
Rain will persist in eastern and southern areas. Crete and the Dodecanese will be at the center of thunderstorm activity, which is expected to gradually weaken later in the day.

Saturday, 21 March:
Unstable weather will become more limited, mainly affecting coastal and marine areas in eastern and southern Greece.

Sunday, 22 March – Monday, 23 March:
Instability will continue, with local showers, especially in mainland mountainous areas during the midday and afternoon hours.

Weather outlook for March 25

According to Kolydas, unsettled conditions will continue intermittently into next week.

Although the initial wave of bad weather is not expected to be particularly severe, pressure differences will strengthen northerly winds in the Aegean, bringing cooler air masses.

Despite a slight rise in temperatures, rain is expected in several regions, including Attica, potentially affecting the March 25 national holiday parades.
