The discovery of a marine drone in the Lefkada area by fishermen has caused concern within the ranks of the Hellenic Armed Forces, as diplomatic sources attach great importance to the incident, both because of its timing and its possible operational objectives.
As of yesterday, the Armed Forces officially undertook the investigation into the origin and technical characteristics of the unmanned surface vessel (USV), which was found in a sea cave near Cape Doukato, at the southwestern tip of Lefkada, and is believed to be of Ukrainian origin.
The cave and the possible scenarios
The fact that the marine drone was found inside a cave has heightened concern among Armed Forces personnel, as it strengthens the scenario that it had been hidden there for future use, effectively ruling out the possibility that it ended up in the wider area by accident.
In this context, according to people with deep knowledge of the field, the most likely scenarios are that the marine drone was deliberately guided to the specific location in order to remain concealed there until its operational use. Under such a scenario, it is also possible that it was transported and dropped off in the area by another surface vessel.
The second scenario concerns the possibility that it lost its orientation, likely due to issues with its Starlink satellite connection (as corresponding infrastructure can reportedly be seen in the photos released publicly), causing it to enter the cave. Even in such a case, however, the specific hiding place appears to have been preselected, with the marine drone ultimately heading there based on prior programming or information.
At the same time, the deactivation of the explosives it carried by bomb disposal experts, with assistance from the Hellenic Armed Forces, constitutes another important element under investigation, as the marine drone was reportedly found by Greek fishermen with its engine still running. The presence of explosives also rules out any possibility that the drone was intended merely for surveillance or reconnaissance, according to officials familiar with the matter, indicating instead that it was designed for offensive use.
Moreover, its technology reportedly resembles the Ukrainian-made Magura V3 marine drone, a type extensively used by Kyiv against the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. This type of unmanned surface vessel can travel distances of up to 800 kilometers, reach speeds of up to 80 km/h, and operate autonomously for up to 60 hours. Given that the discovery site is approximately 1,500 kilometers from the Black Sea, one working hypothesis of the Greek authorities is that the drone was intended for use against the so-called “Shadow Fleet” — tankers transporting Russian oil despite Western sanctions and frequently passing through the Aegean and Ionian Seas. Supporting this hypothesis is the presence of detonators, suggesting that the operator may have intended to approach a tanker as it passed near the explosives-laden marine drone.
However, sources familiar with the facts cannot definitively rule out the possibility that the marine drone was part of the equipment used by an illegal drug trafficking or smuggling network, as the use of USVs for transporting narcotics has increased worldwide in recent years.
