Art dealer Giorgos Tsagkarakis was arrested on Friday afternoon in Attica by officers of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime (DAOE), on charges of forgery and antiquities trafficking.
In particular, according to police sources, a search carried out by DAOE officers at a warehouse maintained by the businessman in the area of Elliniko uncovered more than 300 forged paintings and over €200,000 in cash.
According to the same sources, the investigation was prompted by a post made by the well-known gallerist on social media, in which he presented for sale a Gospel dated 1745, as he claimed. The Gospel, which was located and seized, is being examined by experts for its authenticity.
Authorities are continuing investigations in other warehouses and premises used by the accused, who is expected to be brought before a prosecutor tomorrow morning.
Video from protothema.gr in Glyfada captured the moment police officers were emptying the gallery and transporting exhibits into a large truck.
