The government is considering boosting pensioners’ subsidies and expanding eligibility, as they have been the hardest hit by the prolonged wave of inflation - Additional tax measures are also under review

The announcement of new support measures for citizens is just around the corner, which will be based on the surplus figures that will be announced tomorrow by the National Statistical Service. According to protothema.gr, as was the case last year with the announcement on the rent allowance and the subsidy for pensioners, the announcements will be made by Kyriakos Mitsotakis himself and the measures will relate to 2026.

The relevant information was confirmed a short while ago by government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis, speaking to Parapolitika radio. “There is a coherent optimism that we will have good news and then the prime minister will make announcements even tomorrow about new support measures immediately,” Marinakis said, saying the government is doing more than it is allowed to do.

According to protothema.gr, the amount of the surplus that can be allocated is close to 800 million euros, although 300 million euros have been budgeted for the diesel subsidy, the fuel pass and the fertilizer subsidy that has already been announced. This leaves a “cache” of around €500 million, part of which will be for the extension of the diesel subsidy for May (the forecast was for 1+1 month), possibly even for June. It is also necessary to consider what is to be done about fertilisers, which are heavily burdened by the Straits of Hormuz.

The problem of the high level of pollution caused by the Ores Strait of Hormuz is also of great concern.

For the rest of the canvas of measures there is an active negotiation between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the economic staff, headed by Kyriakos Pierrakakis. According to reports, on the table is the strengthening of the pensioners’ subsidy and the widening of the perimeter of beneficiaries, given that they are the “big losers” from the persistent wave of inflation, while other tax measures are also being considered. After the prime minister announces the measures, the government staff will apparently follow up with specifics.
