A visit by a head of state to Athens rarely goes unnoticed by car enthusiasts. And when the visitor is the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the motorcade that crossed the Greek capital yesterday on its way to the Maximos Mansion carried a distinct aura of prestige.
Inevitably, the spotlight fell on the Mercedes-Maybach S 580 e, the flagship plug-in hybrid saloon that transported the Sheikh during his visit.
This particular model is not merely a luxury car. It marks a milestone for Maybach, as it is the first plug-in hybrid in the history of the iconic German marque.
Beneath its long front bonnet lies a 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder petrol engine producing 367 hp and 500 Nm of torque, paired with a 150 kW electric motor.
Together, they deliver a combined output of 510 hp and 750 Nm of torque, propelling this heavyweight saloon from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Its 28 kWh battery provides an all-electric range of up to 100 kilometres, a clear indication that Maybach is now taking electrification seriously.
On the outside, the car is defined by its imposing chrome grille bearing the Maybach lettering, the optional two-tone paint finish and the unmistakable sense that one is looking at something exceptional. At 5.47 metres long, it does not pass unnoticed in any corner of the city.
Inside, the philosophy is simple: the rear-seat passenger is king. A 12.8-inch central OLED display, heated and ventilated seats, a dedicated «Maybach» suspension programme that smooths out road imperfections for rear passengers, an automatic seatbelt extender activated when the door closes, and a top-tier sound system create an interior that feels like a private jet on wheels.
As for the price, in the British market the «standard» Maybach S 580 exceeds €195,000, while the hybrid S 580 e is expected to sit even higher, well above €220,000. In Greece, once taxes are added, one should calculate roughly another €100,000 on top.
Sheikh Tamim’s visit, his first to Athens in two years, forms part of a broader effort to strengthen Greek-Qatari relations. His meeting with Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis at the Maximos Mansion focused on developments in the Middle East, Greece’s support for Gulf countries in the face of Iranian attacks, and the forging of new economic ties. The Qatar Investment Authority has already committed to investments of more than €1 billion in the Greek economy, with energy at the centre of that strategy. During the meeting, the Emir expressed his gratitude for Greece’s stance and signalled an intention to further expand Qatar’s investment presence in the country.
It is no coincidence that Qatar chose this particular model for its Emir. In the Middle East, Maybach enjoys a special status as a symbol of the highest social rank. The S 580 e in particular, combining cutting-edge technology with absolute luxury, fits perfectly with the character of a state visit of this calibre. On the streets of an Athens seeking to reaffirm its role as a serious geopolitical player in the Eastern Mediterranean, the presence of this Maybach served as a fitting prelude to a meeting of considerable significance.
