€3.6 million in compensation for 226 livestock farmers over sheep and goat pox outbreak

The compensation concerns animals that were culled as part of measures to eradicate the sheep and goat pox epidemic

Compensation totaling €3.6 million will be credited today and in the coming days to 226 livestock farmers in the regions of Western Macedonia and Western Greece, according to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food.

The compensation αφορά animals that were slaughtered as part of measures implemented to eliminate the outbreak of sheep and goat pox.

More specifically, in the Region of Western Macedonia, €164,545.70 is being paid to 34 beneficiaries, while in the Region of Western Greece, €3,463,804.30 is being paid to 192 beneficiaries.

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, on April 28 a previous payment of €22,757,594.65 had already been made to 849 beneficiaries as compensation for livestock farmers affected by sheep and goat pox and foot-and-mouth disease.

With today’s payment, the total compensation paid in 2026 for animals culled due to animal disease outbreaks amounts to €26,385,944.65.

Finally, on April 4, €4.4 million was paid to regional authorities to cover operational expenses linked to the implementation of veterinary measures aimed at tackling sheep and goat pox and foot-and-mouth disease.
