A magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck Evia this morning, June 23, with the tremor felt in several parts of Attica, the wider region that includes Athens.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute placed the epicentre 7 kilometres southwest of Prokopi, a village in northern Evia. The earthquake had a focal depth of 5 kilometres, making it relatively shallow and therefore more likely to be felt in nearby areas.
Evia, Greece’s second-largest island, lies close to the eastern coast of mainland Greece and is regularly monitored by Greek seismologists because tremors in the area can also be felt across parts of Attica.
