A fresh security incident was reported on Monday morning in the Gulf of Aden, serving as another reminder that the area remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime routes.
According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), at 10:19 UTC the master of an oil tanker reported a suspicious approach by six small high-speed boats while the vessel was transiting the Gulf of Aden.
One of the speedboats reportedly closed to within five cables (approximately 900 meters) off the vessel’s starboard side. The tanker carried an Armed Security Team (AST), which fired warning shots, causing the approaching boat to turn away. The other five speedboats remained at a distance of approximately one nautical mile, and no further escalation occurred.
Authorities are investigating the incident. So far, no injuries or damage to the vessel have been reported.
Commercial Vessels Urged to Maintain High Alert
EOS Marine has classified the report as highly credible and is urging vessels operating in the area to maintain heightened vigilance.
Guidance issued to shipmasters includes:
- Maintaining continuous visual and electronic surveillance.
- Reporting any suspicious activity immediately to regional maritime authorities.
- Ensuring that embarked armed security teams remain fully prepared where applicable.
In addition, vessels are advised to implement all self-protection measures outlined in the international Best Management Practices (BMP) guidelines to reduce the risk of being approached or attacked.
A High-Risk Maritime Region
The incident comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions across the broader Middle East, with shipping companies closely monitoring any event that could affect the safety of commercial shipping.
Although vessels in the Gulf of Aden frequently encounter small local fishing boats and other civilian craft, maritime authorities stress that every suspicious approach should be treated with the utmost caution, since distinguishing between legitimate maritime activity and a potential threat is not always straightforward.
The latest incident underscores that, despite the significant decline in piracy compared with previous years, transiting the Gulf of Aden still requires enhanced security measures, particularly for oil tankers and other commercial vessels operating along this strategically important shipping corridor.
