One of Europe’s most significant Bronze Age archaeological finds, the famous Villena Treasure (Tesoro de Villena), was stolen in the early hours of Thursday from the museum in the town of Villena, in Spain’s Alicante province.

According to municipal sources cited by Spanish news agency EFE, the case has already been taken up by the Guardia Civil, Spain’s national gendarmerie force, and the Judicial Police, the branch responsible for criminal investigations, who are working to establish the exact circumstances of the theft.

The museum’s alarm was triggered at 05:16 in the morning, though local authorities have so far been unable to determine the full extent of the theft or exactly which objects were taken.

A priceless treasure roughly 3,000 years old

The Villena Treasure is an exceptionally important Bronze Age collection of metalwork dating to around 1000 BC, made up primarily of gold objects.

The pieces include 11 bowls, 28 bracelets and three vessels, alongside three silver vessels, two objects made of amber and gold, one of iron and gold, and an iron bracelet.

In total, the treasure comprises 59 objects of gold, silver, iron and amber, with a combined weight of close to 10 kilograms.

The discovery that changed the region’s archaeological history

The story of how the treasure was found begins in the autumn of 1963 and has an almost cinematic quality. In October 1963, a bracelet turned up in soil that had been transported from the Rambla del Panadero, in the Sierra del Morrón near Villena. It was initially mistaken for part of a truck engine.

The site foreman, Ángel Tomás, reportedly left the object in plain sight, expecting someone to come looking for it, believing it to be a piece of truck bearing.

As fate would have it, the object eventually reached local jeweller Carlos Miguel Esquembre, who recognised that the find needed closer examination and took it to José María Soler, then director of the Municipal Archaeological Museum.

Soler’s examination of the bracelet led to the start of archaeological excavations at the Rambla del Panadero. After several days of digging, on 1 December 1963, Soler and his team made their major discovery.

Inside a vessel buried in the streambed lay the treasure itself, a hoard that would go on to be regarded as one of the most important, and according to Spanish media the single most important, Bronze Age archaeological assemblages in Europe.
