An unusual Twitter exchange took place between Greek PM Alexis Tsipras and Turkish PM Ahmet Davutoglu following the European Council of EU28 leaders. The Greek PM posted four tweets addressing his Turkish counterpart that goaded him about Turkey’s downing of the Russian Su024 jet.
The Twitter exchange began after the EU-Turkey summit on refugees ended in Brussels on Sunday and it is unclear whether the tweets had to do with a conversation that the two men had or were not linked to the summit.
Tweet 1:
“To Prime Minister Davutoglu: Fortunately our pilots are not mercurial as yours against the Russians #EuTurkey.”
Tweet 2:
“What is happening in the Aegean is outrageous and unbelievable #EUTurkey.”
Tweet 3:
“We’re spending billions on weapons. You-to violate our airspace, we-to intercept you #EUTurkey.”
Twitter 4:
“We have the most modern aerial weapons system-andyet, on the ground, we can’t catch traffickers who drown innocent people #EUTurkey.”
On his part, the Turkish PM chose only to respond to the first tweet and not engage in dialogue. He tweeted:
“Comments on pilots by @atsipras seem hardly in tune with the spirit of the day. Alexis: let us focus on our positive agenda.”
The Tweets sparked online debates on Tsipras’ use of Twitter diplomacy. Later, they were deleted from his @Tsipras_EU account however continue to be posted in the Greek language account @atsipras. His choice to delete the Tweets also did not go unnoticed fueling further debate.
Another Tweet by Tsipras came afterwards.
Tweet 5:
“We are in the same neighborhood and we have to talk honestly so we can reach solutions #EUTurkey.”
