Gov’t admits borders are closed

The government worries about the possibility that Visegrad countries might block the deal with Turkey

Newsroom March 10 01:45

Greek government admitted that the borders are in fact closed, said government sources following the meeting held between Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and OECD secretary general Angel Gurria at Maximos Mansion.

However, according to the same sources, the government continues to put the blame on the unilateral actions saying that “regardless of how things go in the next summit, we want EU to condemn the border closing and include it in the summit conclusions, if possible.”

“The conclusions refer to immigrants. But the borders are closed. Our main goal is to have Turkey undertake the refugee management. We argue that a humanitarian route is needed”, said a government official.

However, the government worries about the possibility that Visegrad countries might block also the deal with Turkey on refugee readmission. “if this agreement applies, they should accept the refugees, too”, government sources said.

Regarding yesterday’s statement of European Council President Donald Tusk who welcomed the closing of borders, the same sources said: “We have to watch very carefully what Tusk did yesterday. He is doing that because Europe fails to agree on a common stance. He is trying to prevent a conflict between Visegrad countries and the rest of EU states”.
