The body of a 9-year-old boy, who had been missing since Sunday noon while hiking with his parents, two siblings and a friendly family in the Vouraikos Gorge, was found later at night.
The boy was with his parents and a group of another four adults and two children when he went missing while hiking in the Vouraikos Gorge near the Diakofto-Kalavryta railway line, northern Peloponnese.
The parents told rescuers he fell off a small bridge and disappeared from sight. Special rescue teams consisting of firemen, climbers and divers rushed to the scene and immediately started searching for the boy.
The boy was found very close to the point from where he fell off which is considered the most difficult and dangerous part of the hiking path.
The 9-year-old boy fell from a height of 15 meters into the waters of Vouraikos, while people say that water currents at this part are so strong that even experienced divers are not able to reach the waters, if they are alone.
The parents of the child are devastated, while the father was kept saying: “I am an unfit father. I lost my child; get the custody of my children from me…”.
