CNN paid tribute to Greece’s dreams of creating a new, affordable seaplane network thanks to the vision of Hellenic Seaplanes that aims to connect the country through seaports and lakes thus solving the transportation problems of hard-to-reach areas.
The article, titled “Taking to the Skies Around Greece”, applauds the company’s efforts to create a faster alternative to the ferry by making tickets to its seaplanes more affordable. The article asks: “How many travelers have embarked on an adventure from Athens’ Piraeus port planning to explore the Cyclades, Ionian and Dodecanese archipelagos only to realize they’ve just got time to grab a Greek salad in Santorini before catching the boat home?”
Hellenic Seaplanes, created in May 2013, says that it plans to connect 100 Greek destinations by 2016 with the first routes operational by May 2015. This will make island-hopping trips to remote destinations much easier. The island of Skyros is planned to be one of the first in the Sporades chain of islands to welcome the seaplanes with a waterway set to be constructed at Linaria Port. Seaplanes may even increase tourism to locations worth exploring but difficult to get to, such as Frangokastello castle in southern Crete.
CNN then goes on to showcase the beauties of the isle of Crete, Pylion, Skyros, Kavala and the isle of Lefkas – all to be included as destinations offered by Hellenic Seaways.
