In a recent poll conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), 57 per cent of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia’s (FYROM) residents agree that they should enter NATO and the European Union under the name “Republic of North Macedonia”.

The majority of the respondents fully or partially agree with the new name as part of the deal signed with Greece in June.

Only 38 per cent of FYROM residents said they do not agree with the name while 83 per cent in total were in favor of their nation joining the EU with 77 per cent wanting to become a member of NATO.

Once the FYROM government holds the much anticipated and crucial referendum on 30 September, and if the parliament votes to officially change the country’s constitution and its name to North Macedonia, Greece will then lift the ban, allowing the country becoming a member of the EU and NATO.

Regarding the referendum, 49 per cent said they would vote in favour of the new name with only 22 per cent that plan to vote against.
