Handelsblatt: Samaras seeks Merkel’s support

"Mr. Samaras wants to explain to Chancellor Merkel how necessary is to proceed to tax cuts especially after the victory of SYRIZA in European elections", says the article

Newsroom September 23 02:42

The German newspaper published an article on Greek Prime Minister’s meeting with German Chancellor and talks about “difficult negotiations” referring to the upcoming visit of Troika to Athens.

According to the article “Mr. Samaras hopes to return to Athens with positive messages, since his trip takes place prior to very difficult negotiations. Troika is expected to visit Athens next week. The representatives of lenders warn about the fact that the required reforms have not yet been implemented”.

The article also mentions that “Troika is skeptical about the tax cuts the government is planning. That is why Mr. Samaras wants to explain to Chancellor Merkel how necessary is to proceed to tax cuts especially after the victory of SYRIZA [the main opposition party] in European elections”.

The newspaper highlights that although Greek government knows that Ms. Merkel does not determine Troika’s position, they estimate that she might exert some influence.
“Samaras is expected to ask for the support of German Chancellor on Greek debt relief issue, as it was stated in November 2012 by Eurogroup”.

The article also includes some statements of Greek Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis regarding his wish for longer debt repayment and lower interest rate.

“Greece wants to conclude as soon as possible the negotiations with Troika and the debt negotiations. These moves would show that Greece can stand on its own feet and that the period of troika is over”.
