The Greek government has suspended Super League matches this week as a mark of respect following the death of a soccer fan during violent clashes. 46-year-old Kostas Katsoulis died early on Monday after he fell into a coma from an act of hooliganism involving the fans of Ethnikos Pireaus (National Piraeus) and Irodotos during a third division match in Crete on September 15.

Mr. Katsoulis, a Ethnikos Piraeus supporter suffered serious head injuries and fell into a coma.

Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports Giannis Adrianos announced that all rounds of matches involving team sports would be suspended over the weekend.

This means that the sixth round of Super League matches will not go ahead and the third round of third division matches, the basketball Greek Cup and the second round of Greece’s handball top flight will also be affected.
