4.6 magnitude earthquake in Turkey

The earthquake was strongly felt - focus on Canakkale - no reports of damage

A 4.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at 16:09 Turkish time (15:09 Greek time) in the town of Biga, in the Dardanelles (Canakkale prefecture of northwestern Turkey. The focal depth of the earthquake was located at 27.03 km.

The earthquake was particularly felt in Biga, the neighbouring city of Dardanelles, the capital of the prefecture, and the neighbouring prefectures around the Sea of Marmara, causing inconvenience to residents.

The mayor of Biga, Bulent Erdogan, speaking to CNN Turk, said there are no reports of any problems so far.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in a post on social media, noted:

“In the 4.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred in Biga of Canakkale, the Natural Disaster and Emergency Service and all teams of our relevant institutions have started on-site scans. At present there is no alarming situation. We are monitoring developments.
