French sailing ship Belem sets sail to Greece to collect Olympic Flame, embarking on unprecedented journey

Newsroom April 9 06:18

In a groundbreaking moment for Olympic tradition, the iconic French sailing ship Belem is embarking on a historic voyage to transport the Olympic Flame for the Paris 2024 Games.

With 16 professional sailors and approximately 100 passengers on board, the three-masted vessel is already underway, charting its course towards Greece, where it will receive the Flame on April 26 from Piraeus before setting sail for Marseille on May 8.

In an exclusive interview with the French newspaper Ouest-France, the director of the Foundation managing the Belem, shared insights into this landmark journey.

Among the notable details revealed was the presence of three flame keepers and 16 young individuals, aged 17 to 25, who have been invited aboard the ship.

These young participants, who have limited experience in water sports and leisure activities, represent a diverse range of backgrounds and are set to embark on a transformative journey.

The Belem’s itinerary includes stops in Olbia, Sardinia, Catania in Sicily, and Katakolon in Greece, before reaching its final destination of Olympia and subsequently Athens.

Prior to its arrival in the Greek capital, passengers disembarking in Olympia will have the unique opportunity to witness the flame-lighting ceremony, adding an extra layer of significance to their journey.

Reflecting on the significance of this unprecedented voyage, the director expressed both excitement and a sense of responsibility.

“The Flame has always been transported by plane, it has never arrived by boat, so this is something that is happening for the first time,” she remarked.

Emphasising the importance of meticulous planning and favorable conditions, the director underscored the team’s commitment to ensuring the safe and timely delivery of the Flame.

“We depend on various factors, we can’t control everything.
