Symi: How Can One Disappear Without a Trace (update)

The Search for BBC Presenter Intensifies

Newsroom June 7 09:31

The British journalist fell on the rocks and then into the sea currently trained dogs and drones are searching every inch of the path taken by the 67-year-old as well as the testimony of the last person who saw him.

A thriller unfolds on the island of Symi as the search for BBC presenter Michael Mosley intensifies. Missing since Wednesday afternoon, authorities and volunteers are scouring the island for any trace of him. Despite witness accounts suggesting he may have reached a bus stop safely, his whereabouts remain unknown. All possibilities, including a fall into the sea, are being considered by authorities.

A route commonly traversed by tourists in Symi has become the center of a mysterious disappearance, as BBC presenter Michael Mosley has been missing since Wednesday. An island resident described it to the BBC as a path tourists take daily.

According to an official cited by The Guardian, the situation is baffling. “It’s crazy, it doesn’t make sense. How can someone disappear in broad daylight? If something had happened to him, we would have found him either on or near the path he took to return to Gialos, where he was staying with friends,” the official told the British newspaper.

A resident, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, emphasized that the area where Mosley went missing is straightforward. “It’s a path that goes up the mountain but has been recently excavated, leaving only one road, so it’s impossible to get lost. It is a route tourists in Symi take every day.” It’s important to note that Mosley began his journey amid 36°C temperatures.

Investigations

Firefighters and police officers from Symi and Rhodes, aided by a drone, are scouring the area for the 67-year-old presenter, who was vacationing in Greece. A helicopter was brought in on Thursday afternoon to support the search efforts.

The investigation is further complicated because Mosley did not have his mobile phone with him, as both he and his wife had left them at their residence.

The Disappearance Timeline

It all started on Wednesday afternoon when Mosley informed his group (his wife and a couple of friends) that he was heading from Agios Nikolaos beach back to their house in Gyalos but never returned. His wife raised the alarm a few hours later, and the disappearance quickly made headlines in Britain.

Local group Symi posted a photo of Mosley, asking, “Have you seen this man? He started walking back from Agios Nikolaos at about 13:30 and failed to return home. His friends are worried as it has been 6 hours since they last saw him. His name is Dr. Mike Mosley, a familiar face to many Britons.” His wife, Claire Bailey, reported him missing to the police on Thursday morning.

Authorities and Local Reactions

The mayor of Symi stressed the need to expand the search to the sea. “Pedi is a central point, well-searched; if he were there, we would have found him. Unfortunately, nothing has been found yet,” he told protothema.gr.
