Main opposition Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) MEP Manolis Glezos on Monday reiterated his position in favor of proportional representation.

Speaking on VIMA FM on Monday, the Greek left wing politician and writer, known worldwide for his participation in the World War II resistance, said that SYRIZA will call new elections based on the proportional representation system if it wins the elections with the 50-seat bonus, received by the political party with the most votes as provided by the existing election law.

However, contrary to Mr. Glezos’ statements, the official leadership of SYRIZA has long ceased to mention the issue of electoral law. In fact, party officials reacted strongly to a recent proposal made by PASOK for the abolition of the bonus.

The truth is that the main opposition party does not want the current electoral system to change, as it favors the plans of its leadership to come to power. Moreover, as party officials have admitted in private conversations, without the 50-seat bonus no self-sufficient majority can be achieved in the case of elections.
