War in Ukraine: Hydroelectric Plant Targeted in Russian Attack on Kyiv, Government Says

Russia Confirms Attack on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure - Zelensky Requests European Air Forces to Counter Russian Missiles

Newsroom August 26 03:55

The Ukrainian government has reported that today’s Russian attack targeted a hydroelectric plant in the Kyiv region. Andrii Sybiha, a Ukrainian Foreign Ministry official, confirmed on Twitter that the attack aimed at Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, including the Kyiv hydroelectric power station.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky requested assistance from European air forces to counter the Russian missile and drone attacks that have heavily impacted Ukraine today. Zelensky emphasized that greater protection could be achieved with the cooperation of European air forces alongside Ukraine’s F-16s and air defense systems. He compared the situation to recent Western support for Israel in the Middle East and called for similar support for Ukraine.

According to Zelensky, Russia launched over 100 missiles and around 100 drones in today’s attack. He described it as one of the most significant combined strikes, targeting critical non-military infrastructure, with substantial damage to the energy sector.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba suggested that an agreement to utilize partner countries’ air defense capabilities to intercept missiles and drones near their airspace could help end Russian attacks on Ukraine more quickly.

Ukraine has been pressing its European allies to establish an air defense zone in the western part of the country, using systems deployed in neighboring Poland and Romania to protect industries, energy infrastructure, and civilian populations.

Kuleba had stated in late March that there were no legal, security, or ethical arguments against partners intercepting Russian missiles over Ukrainian territory from their territory, though details of such a scenario were not specified.

President Zelensky has been consistently requesting additional airspace protection systems from Western allies for several months.

Russia has confirmed that it targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure today with precision weapons, as reported by the Russian news agency Interfax, citing a statement from the Russian Ministry of Defense. Kyiv’s military command reported that Ukraine’s air defense systems intercepted approximately 15 missiles and 15 drones aimed at the capital during today’s Russian assault.
