Eiffel tower to turn off its lights tonight in memory of the October 7 victims

"This heinous attack plunged the Middle East into chaos, where the civilian death toll has reached tens of thousands," emphasized the Paris city government

Newsroom October 7 09:30

The Eiffel Tower will turn off its lights tonight at 11:45 PM local time to honor the memory of the victims of Hamas’ unprecedented attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, as it did a year ago, the Paris municipal authority told the French news agency.

“To commemorate this tragedy and pay tribute to the victims of October 7, as well as those who died while being held captive, Paris has decided to turn off the Eiffel Tower’s lights tonight at 11:45 PM,” for a few minutes, announced the city council, which owns the iconic monument of the French capital.

The Eiffel Tower went dark last year following Hamas‘ unprecedented attack, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, and led to the war in Gaza, causing nearly 42,000 deaths and opening another front in Lebanon.

On October 9, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated in the colors of the Israeli flag.

“This despicable attack, the first pogrom of the 21st century, has plunged the Middle East into chaos, where civilian casualties number in the tens of thousands,” added the Paris city government.

“Beyond this act of remembrance, the Paris municipal authority calls for a just and lasting peace, for the pursuit of peaceful solutions for Israeli citizens as well as for Palestinian and Lebanese civilians,” and “reaffirms its commitment to a two-state solution.”
