SYRIZA Party Conference Elections Heat Up as Both Factions Claim Victory

With the SYRIZA Progressive Alliance gearing up for its conference, competing party factions vie for influence in a contentious first round of internal delegate elections.

The two factions within SYRIZA—supporters of Stefanos Kasselakis (“Casselists”) and the current majority leadership—have both claimed early success in the internal delegate elections ahead of next Friday’s conference. While their results and interpretations of voting outcomes differ sharply, both camps are energetically projecting an air of victory.

A Divisive Start to the Delegate Elections

On the first day, only 43 polling stations—about 10% of the total—participated in voting, with approximately 550 more expected to join the process across grassroots organizations today. Despite this limited turnout, both camps celebrated the results. Each claimed initial gains, with vote counts and interpretations varying widely, creating a mix of optimistic statements and allegations of interference.

An incident reported at the Agios Dimitrios polling station added to the tensions, as accusations of ballot manipulation surfaced. Allegedly, a coordinator dropped a ballot for an absent member into the box. The coordinator denied any wrongdoing, labeling it a deliberate attempt to remove him from his role in the Election Committee.

Kasselakis Claims Strong Grassroots Support

Kasselakis’ camp announced a sweeping “61.3%” victory across voting stations that participated on day one, calling it a “clear triumph.” Kasselakis encouraged his supporters, stating, “A river of democracy will sweep away lists, blockades, and barriers.” He thanked members for their engagement, urging them to return to the polls in even greater numbers for day two.

In his message, Kasselakis warned that some within the party would attempt to undermine the process, calling for calm and resilience among his supporters to ensure that “democracy returns to SYRIZA.”

The Majority’s Response: Accusations and Confidence

Meanwhile, the majority leadership dismissed Kasselakis’ announcements as misleading. Majority representatives accused him of “peddling false victories” and insisted that initial results showed a comfortable majority for the current leadership. They listed polling stations where they claimed to have gained clear victories, such as Ilisia, Heraklion, and Lemnos.

Competing Claims at Polling Stations

Each side provided examples of polling stations where they dominated:

  • Majority Victories: Examples include Zografou (18-4), Corfu (20-10), and Malevizi (7-3).
  • Kasselakis Support: Stations like Aegina (4-0) and Spetses (2-0) showed his side claiming uncontested victories.

The Path to Final Victory

The intense competition between the two camps reflects the high stakes of the upcoming conference, as the factions continue mobilizing members across the country. While Kasselakis is expected to fare well in areas like Western Athens, the majority claims strength in the North and South of Athens and across other parts of Greece.
