New emergency weather alert from EMY – Storm “Alexandros” to hit several areas

Extended severe weather with storms until Saturday

Newsroom November 15 12:30

The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued a new emergency weather bulletin as storm “Alexandros” is expected to bring severe weather across many parts of Greece. The warning, issued on Friday afternoon, highlights heavy rain and local thunderstorms from Friday (November 15) through late Saturday (November 16).

Key Areas Affected

High-risk regions include Thessaly, Northern Sporades, Evia, and Fthiotida, where the combination of intense rainfall and strong northeasterly winds may cause localized flooding.

Additional regions of concern on Saturday are the islands of the Eastern and Southern Aegean, especially from Chios southwards to the Dodecanese.

Weather Details

A low-pressure system in the Ionian Sea and unstable atmospheric conditions are expected to generate heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail. The storm will also bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly in northern Greece. The intensity of the weather phenomena is expected to last approximately 30 hours.

Friday: Heavy rain and storms will begin in the Ionian Sea in the morning, spreading to Epirus, Western Sterea, and parts of the Peloponnese by the afternoon. The impact will reach Western Macedonia, Thessaly, Sporades, and Evia by the evening.

Saturday: Severe weather will continue in Thessaly, Sporades, and Eastern Sterea until late afternoon. It is expected to impact the Aegean islands and the Dodecanese early in the morning, with isolated strong storms in the Cyclades and western Crete later in the day.

Wind Alerts

Strong northeasterly winds, reaching 8 to 9 Beaufort, are expected in the Northern Aegean from Friday night through Saturday. High winds will also affect the Central Aegean on Saturday afternoon.

Residents in affected areas are advised to stay informed, take precautions, and monitor updates from local authorities and EMY for the latest weather developments.
