Jānis Timma found dead at 32 in Moscow apartment

Russian reports suggest the former Olympiacos player may have taken his own life

According to a report from Russian news outlet news.ru, Jānis Timma was found dead outside an apartment building in Moscow.

The 32-year-old player, who had a stint in the Greek league during the 2018-19 season with Olympiacos, is reported to have taken his own life. Near his body, his phone was discovered with the screensaver displaying the phrase “Call Anna,” referring to his ex-wife, Anna Sedokova, whom he reportedly split from recently.

Jānis Timma’s Career

Jānis Timma was born on July 2, 1992, and began his basketball journey in Riga, making his professional debut with Liepāja Lauvas during the 2011-12 season. From 2012 to 2014, he played for Ventspils, before returning to Riga for the 2014-15 season.

In 2015, Timma took a major step in his career, joining Zenit St. Petersburg, where he played until 2017, followed by a transfer to Baskonia.

Timma then played for Olympiacos during the 2018-19 season before returning to Russia with Khimki for two years, followed by a stint with UNICS Kazan. In 2022, he moved to the United States, playing for the Lakeland Magic in the NBA G League. Later that season (2022-23), he joined Grises de Humacao in Puerto Rico.

In 2023, Timma returned to Europe, signing with Darüşşafaka, and in 2024, he became a player for Obradoiro. In the 2013 NBA Draft, his rights were acquired by the Memphis Grizzlies. Timma was also a key member of the Latvian national team.

During his EuroLeague tenure with Olympiacos, Timma averaged 3.4 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.7 assists in 11:31 minutes per game.
