Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras expressed his disappointment regarding the results of the fight against tax evasion, leaving Harris Theoharis, the Secretary General of Public Revenues exposed. Speaking to Ant1 TV, Mr. Stournaras said he is not pleased, because, as he pointed out, the burden falls on the shoulders of the employees, the pensioners, the small tradesmen whereas he would like to see more effort against the so-called ‘middle and big fish’.
“We will give a big fight against tax evasion. However, I can’t say I am completely happy with the results in this field. I have the feeling that we keep chasing the ‘usual suspects’, the employees, the pensioners, the small tradesmen. I would like to see more effort against those we call middle and big fish,” stressed the Minister of Finance.
Mr. Stournaras expressed confidence that the government will come first in the elections, because, as he stressed, the people understand that after the difficulties and enormous sacrifices, the hard part is now over. He also noted that the economy is now growing rapidly.
According to the minister, the stabilization of the economy will pave the road for the removal of the emergency solidarity levy. The new target of the Finance Ministry will be the reduction of taxation rates and the relief of social groups most affected by the crisis, Mr. Stournaras added.
