Ten Greeks, lead global shipping industry

Greece tops the world's shipping industry in 2014

Greece controls 15.17% of the world commercial fleet, based on tonnage, with 164 million tons, followed by Japan at 13.8%, China with 13.8%, Germany with 7.7% and Korea with 4.6%. Singapore controls 3.98% and Taiwan controls 2.74%. According to Clarkson Research Services Limited, the most expensive fleet based on the ships and their running market value is owned by Japan, which is worth 100 billion dollars. The U.S. follows with 82 billion, Greece at 72 billion, China at 61 billion and Germany at 60 billion. The total value of the world’s commercial fleet is estimated at 809 billion dollars. The first five countries in the list based on fleet value control 48% of the market, and the top ten control 67% of the global shipping industry, regarding ships. By the end of March 2014, according to Lloyd’s Register – Fairply and Committee, the Greek-interests, Greek-owned fleet has increased by 5.7%.

In particular, the number of ships reached 3.901, totaling a capacity of 290.8 million tons, up by 224 ships of a 25.5 million tons capacity. Within this total are the 378 ships of 22.4 million tons under construction.

The leading Greek owners with private shipping companies not listed on stock exchanges, according to Clarkson data based on the number of ships and not tonnage, and are in the top five, are:

-Mr. Yannis Angelikousis of the eponymous group with 96 ships of a total capacity of 18.6 million tons, with an average capacity of 194,720 tons.

-Mr. Victor Resits with Enterprises Shipping with 81 available ships, totaling a capacity of 7185000 tons, with an average of 88708 tons.

-Mr. Dinos Martinos with Thenamaris, with 56 ships, with a capacity of 5.1 million tons.

-Mr. Andreas Martinos with Minerva Marine, with 53 ships, with a capacity of 7.5 million tons.

Regarding the Greek-interests companies listen in the top five based on the Clarkson list:

-Navios group of Ms. Angeliki Frangou, with 112 ships with a total capacity of 10.7 million tons, and an average capacity of 95919 tons.

-Dynacom Tankers owned by Mr. G. Prokopiou with 112 ships, with a capcity of 10.7 million tons, and an average of 95919 tons.
