Greece’ poor celebrate a festive Christmas (photos)

The Municipality of Athens offered Christmas meals for the homeless but had to turn dozens away in an act of kindness that will be repeated on New Year's Eve

Newsroom December 26 08:35

With more than 25% of Greeks without a job, poverty levels are at an all-time high. For this reason, people lined up for free Christmas dinners by the food bank of the Center of Reception and Solidarity of the Municipality of Athens. The lunch was held at the sports hall in a festive atmosphere that gave those who have been hard-hit by the crisis, the opportunity for some respite from hardship.

Families with children, young people and the elderly all showed up for the festive Christmas meal. Over 800 people had traditional Turkey, a salad, soft drinks and dessert. An added 100 meals were offered to people who had to be turned away from the venue because the demand was so high.
