After Spanish and Italian bonds, BlackRock sold off its Portuguese bonds, marking the exit of a top player from the bond markets in the region. It should be noted that Larry Fink’s BlackRock is the largest asset management company in the world.
As stated by Rick Rieder (depicted in the photo), the co-head of BlackRock’s US-based bonds, the investment firm is concerned about the Eurozone’s financial health.
“The opportunities are much more limited and evaluations are not very attractive compared to other markets at this stage”, stated Rieder, adding that “We love Mexico, some investments in Brazil, India and Indonesia”.
However, Rieder does not provide for a sharp drop in the bond markets of the region. In contrast, he expressed the view that these titles “will continue to perform relatively well”, finding support at the prospect of further movement of the ECB.
“There are huge expectations about what the ECB’s next moves will be. I think they will be aggressive”, stated Rieder.
It should be noted that BlackRock has reportedly made placements in the new 5-year Greek bonds upon their issuance, and the capital increases of Greek banks.
