In Thessaly, young girls suffuse springs around the village with butter and honey at dawn on Christmas day or on New Year’s Eve. They “steal the speechless water” and for this reason do not utter a word during this event. By buttering the taps and pouring them with honey they secure that prosperity runs through their household and there is sweetness in their life. The first girl to make her way to the tap is the one who would have the most luck throughout the year.
They steal water in their pitches and also add a leaf and three pebbles. They go home and spill some water at the four corners of the house and throw the three pebbles. Following this they drink the water and can only speak once the entire process is over.
