Prasino Ladi: An easy way to become a recycling champion

Recycling cooking oil is a simple action with great importance for the environment, which we can all do and very easily

Newsroom February 28 07:20

We are a Mediterranean country that loves oil, a staple of Greek cuisine. We cook with oil daily and in all ways. In recent years, of course, our eating habits have changed quite a bit, and as a result we avoid many fried foods. However, let’s face it, we do make missteps. We fry potatoes for the kids, meatballs of all types for the company’s snacks, and fluffy omelets for those hearty weekend mornings. And what about the leftover oil in the pan or fryer? Either we store it in a bottle and then throw it in the municipal bins or we throw it down the sink. Neither of these practices is appropriate. We are causing a small environmental damage that is turned into a huge one by the cumulative effect of everyone’s habits.

But there is a way to not only reverse the damage we are doing but to benefit the environment, ourselves, and our national economy. If instead of dumping frying oil into the environment, we collected it for the purpose of producing a friendly fuel, biodiesel, things would be very different.

The company “Prasino Ladi”, which has been active since 2011, with its new campaign urges us to secure the future of the next generations by reminding us that recycling of frying oil is an essential act of circular economy and an important way of raising awareness for the protection of the environment. Now it is easier and faster than ever before, thanks to the Prasino Ladi app.
But let’s look at everything in more detail.

So simple, so important
By throwing frying oils down the sink, we cause problems of foul odors and clogs in our homes’ pipes and “grease mountains” in the sewers. Through the sewerage system, the frying oils end up either in the subsoil or in the sea, with negative consequences for ecosystems. They also cause major problems for biological treatment, resulting in significant separation costs, which are borne by all of us.

By collecting and properly treating pancake oils, a green fuel, biodiesel, can be produced, which is supported by the European Union since it is the cleanest fuel with the smallest environmental footprint (reduction of greenhouse gases from 84 to 88% compared to fossil diesel). In addition, we help the national economy since we substitute oil imports.

Recycling just 1 liter of frying oil produces 1 liter of biodiesel, which saves 3kg of CO2 from the atmosphere, prevents the degradation of 1 million liters of water (the amount used by one person in 14 years, and saves about 3.1 kWh (from energy not consumed in biological purification).

The company “Prasino Ladi” focuses on collecting frying oil for the production of biodiesel, the green fuel that actively contributes to mitigating the effects of climate change. All we need to do is to take 3 basic steps:

Step 1: After frying, allow the oil to cool

Step 2: Collect the frying oil in a plastic bottle and close the lid very tightly.

Step 3: Download the Prasino Ladi app from the App Store for iPhone or Google Play Store. We arrange the appointment for pick up from our home (for Athena and soon in new areas). Or we find the nearest delivery point somewhere near us. It can be a gas station or supermarket or the bakery in our neighborhood or even a restaurant that cooperates with the company “Prasino Ladi” and accepts our plastic bottle of 1.5 liters.

So, let’s make our kitchen an environmentally friendly place, thus ensuring our children’s future.
