Following the arrest of 25-year-old Romanian Stephan, who was apprehended on Monday at Victoria’s Square in Athens for the murder of famous Greek writer Menis Koumandareas, the police are trying to locate a 29-year-old man who allegedly helped his compatriot kill the 83-year-old man.
Police sources say that the arrest of Stephan accomplice is only a few hours away, as the raids conducted at the houses of his friends in Victoria Square, where he lives, are expected to pay off soon. According to the information they have managed to gather so far, the 29-year-old Romanian has not fled the country yet and they are close to finding him.
In the meantime, arrestee Stefan M., despite his initial refusal to cooperate, finally broke down and confessed all the details of the heinous crime. His testimony describes the whole scene from the moment the two men crossed the threshold of the apartment until the moment the author fell dead. Of course, the perpetrator gave his version of events, according to which the two men got into a heated argument and he pushed the author who fell and met his tragic death. However, this claim is not consistent with the forensic report which clearly says that the death of the author was caused by strangulation.
More specifically, Stephan claimed that he had been meeting over the last ten years with the 83-year-old writer. According to him they were good friends, they used to have long talks and the author was even supporting him financially. The perpetrator confessed to the police that when Menis Koumandareas told him that he had recently sold an apartment, he decided to go and ask him for some money with a friend of his. When the author refused to give the two Romanian men cash, Stephan pushed him and he fell. The two men fled the scene and only realized that Menis Koumandareas was dead when they heard it on the news the next day, the arrestee claims.
