The SYRIZA’s lead in European elections with more than three points is balanced from the prevalence of New Democracy in most of the regions and along with the percentage Elia party received, the government can continue its course, but with a strong mandate for change in policies and persons.

The interpretation of the elections provided by the election analysts combining European elections and local elections is that voters have voted for a political stability but they also sent a strong message to the government asking for a change in policy practices.

The reshuffle of government, which was announced by PASOK leader Evangelos Venizelos, is one of the first changes that the elections will bring. Also, it is expected other initiatives to be taken by the prime minister Antonis Samaras in order to extend parliamentary majority on which the government coalition is based.

Initial discussions refer to a stronger presence of PASOK and participation of other members in the government.

SYRIZA, apart from its lead in the European elections, can boast its candidates’ victory in two regions and especially in the largest constituency, Attica region, with Rena Dourou. The percentage, though, SYRIZA gathered is not big enough to talk about a clear topple of the government.

On the other hand, the government party that saw its percentages declining – New Democracy by six points and PASOK by four points – can claim that SYRIZA did not succeed to turn the elections into a referendum on the policy practices since the coalition government won the majority of the regions – New Democracy got seven regions and PASOK two regions- and Municipalities.

Another winner is To Potami party, which before even completing three months of life achieved a remarkable percentage of 6.6 % making it one of the strong players in the new political scene.

One of the losers of the elections, apart form Democratic Left which received 1.23 %, is the Independent Greeks, who received 3.39 % loosing almost 2/3 of their voters.
