Weather: Thermal storms, then a barometric low bring mini autumn

Stable weather will be the main feature over the next few days with rain and northerly winds in Greece. According to EMY, today the phenomena will be locally strong until the afternoon in central and eastern Macedonia and during the midday and afternoon hours in Thessaly and the eastern Peloponnese.

As Alpha meteorologist George Tsatrafyllias says in a post, thermal storms and a low barometric bring a mini autumn.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected today during the warmer hours of the day on the mainland and in Crete, especially in the mountains, with temperatures 5-6 degrees below normal and north winds up to 6 Beaufort. On Wednesday and Thursday the volatility will be limited and the mercury will show up to 24 degrees Celsius, while on Friday and Saturday a barometric low will bring rain, dust and thunderstorms in most areas, strong southerly winds and 30s in Crete. Temperatures up to 23-24 degrees in other areas.

Temperatures in the 27-29 degree range on Monday

Unchanged temperatures prevailed on Monday 12 May, again reaching 27-29 degrees in places. The highest maximum temperature was recorded in Gortyna Heraklion where the mercury reached 29.2 degrees Celsius.

Today’s weather

Unsettled weather is expected, mainly in the mainland, the North Aegean and Crete. From early in the morning, areas of the central and northern part of the country will experience showers and thunderstorms, which from midday will extend to most of the mainland, the North Aegean and in places in Crete. The phenomena will be locally intense with the possibility of hail.

The temperature will range in Western Macedonia from 6 to 18 degrees Celsius, in the rest of Macedonia and Thrace from 8 to 21-23 degrees Celsius, in Thessaly from 10 to 23-24 degrees Celsius, in Epirus from 10 to 24-25 degrees Celsius, in the rest of the mainland from 13 to 25-27 degrees Celsius, in the Ionian Islands from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius and in the Aegean Islands and Crete from 13 to 23 degrees Celsius, but in the East Aegean Islands the maximum will reach 26 degrees Celsius.

The winds will blow in the northernmost parts of the Aegean from the north northeast at 4-5 Beaufort, in the rest of the Aegean from northwestern directions with the same intensities, while in the area of Kastellorizo western winds will prevail with intensities of 6-7 Beaufort. In the Ionian Sea, the winds will blow from the west northwest at 4-5 Beaufort.

In Attica we expect a few clouds which will increase from noon, giving showers or thunderstorms mainly in the west. Winds will blow from the north with intensities 2-4 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 17 to 25 degrees Celsius.

In Thessaloniki we expect clouds with showers or thunderstorms mainly during the warm hours of the day. Winds will blow from variable directions with intensities of 2-3 Beaufort. The temperature will range from 16 to 21-22 degrees Celsius.

The weather on Wednesday (14/05)

In central and eastern Macedonia, Thessaly and the Sporades clouds, partly cloudy, with local showers and isolated thunderstorms. Improvement from late afternoon. In the rest of the country, initially generally clear weather with a few clouds, which will increase in the Ionian and the rest of the mainland in the midday – afternoon hours and rain or isolated thunderstorms will occur, mainly in the mainland mountains.

Winds will blow from the north, in the west 3 to 4 Beaufort, in the east 4 to 5 Beaufort and locally in the eastern and southern Aegean Sea 6 Beaufort.

The weather on Thursday (15/05)

Thin clouds that will quickly become thicker from the west and gradually local rain will occur in the Ionian Sea, the mainland, Evia, the Sporades, the Cyclades and Crete. Sporadic thunderstorms will occur in the west from the afternoon.

Winds will blow in the west east southeast 3 to 5 and gradually in the Ionian Sea up to 6 Beaufort. In the southeastern Aegean Sea the winds will be northwestern 5 to 6 Beaufort with gradual weakening and in the rest of the country from northern directions 3 to 5 Beaufort, gradually turning to southeastern with the same intensity.

The temperature will not change significantly.

The weather on Friday (16/05)

In the northern Ionian Sea and the central and northern mainland increasing clouds with showers and mainly in the northwest sporadic thunderstorms. In the rest of the country thin clouds, sometimes more dense, with occasional local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms.

Winds will blow east southeast 4 to 6 and in the sea locally 7 Beaufort, gradually in the central and southern parts south with the same intensity.

The temperature will drop slightly in the north and rise slightly in the south.

The weather on Saturday (17/05)

In the Ionian, western and northern mainland clouds with showers and occasional thunderstorms, possibly heavy in places, weakening from the afternoon. In the rest of the country, thin clouds, sometimes more dense in the eastern mainland and the islands of the northern Aegean with local rain and possibly isolated thunderstorms.

Winds will blow in the west, central and northern areas west northwestern 4 to 5 Beaufort and in the remaining areas from southern directions 5 to 6, occasionally locally 7 Beaufort.

The temperature will not change significantly.
