A tragic incident has deeply shocked Greece, as a 14-year-old boy made a heroic attempt to save his 12-year-old friend from drowning in the Arachthos River, only for both children to be pulled under. Both are now hospitalized in critical condition in the ICU of Rio Hospital, intubated and under intensive medical care.
What Happened
According to reports, the 12-year-old was the first to jump into the river. When he began to drown, the 14-year-old, seeing his friend in danger, immediately jumped in to rescue him. Tragically, in the process, the 14-year-old hit his head, causing both boys to vanish underwater.
They were later pulled from the river unconscious. According to doctors, despite aggressive treatment aimed at reducing swelling in their brains, their condition remains extremely critical. Medical staff describe the first 24 hours as crucial. So far, neither child has responded to any medication.
Timeline of Rescue Efforts
Witnesses report the boys remained submerged for approximately 20 minutes before being retrieved. An additional 30 minutes passed before CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was initiated at the Arta Hospital, where doctors fought desperately to revive them.
Eyewitness Hero: “I dove without a second thought”
One man, Goga Levian, is being hailed as a local hero after risking his life to help. Speaking to ProtoThema.gr, he described the moment he decided to intervene:
“I was at the café when a boy came on a motorbike screaming, ‘Help! Two kids are drowning in the river!’ I didn’t think twice. I jumped in my car and rushed to the spot. I went through the reeds but couldn’t see anything. I got on a boat with others and dove in. The first dive—I found nothing. The second time, I took a deep breath and dove deeper, around eight meters. That’s when I saw him—laying still, face darkened, arms and legs spread. I pulled him up with difficulty. Then I heard they’d found the second child. I dove again, two or three more times. I found him lying on his back at the bottom. Blood was coming from his nose and mouth. It scared me.”
Levian added, moved and emotional:
“One of the boys is the same age as my daughter. I don’t care about race, religion, or background. I’m a foreigner, but I’m human. I did what any father would do. I just keep thinking of the children. I hope they survive. I hope they wake up and live their lives. It’s heartbreaking. Now even my own children are crying at home. I need to go back…”
Medical Condition and Hopes
Doctors continue to monitor the boys’ condition around the clock. Their families remain at their bedsides, hoping for a miracle. Medical professionals stress that while the odds are challenging, every possible measure is being taken.
This story of courage, tragedy, and human solidarity has gripped the nation, with many expressing prayers and support for the two young boys and their families.
