The return of purple jellyfish to Greek waters this summer has raised concerns among both residents and environmental organizations, who are now working to track their locations.

According to the Hellenic Biodiversity Observatory, there is currently a surge in purple jellyfish sightings, with reports from Chalkida and the northern Evoikos Gulf.

Specifically, the Observatory states:

“Northern Evia is already facing a serious issue, as it acts as an outlet from the Pagasetic Gulf to the open sea. The Pagasetic Gulf itself continues to have jellyfish activity, especially along its eastern shores. The outbreak has spread as far as the Northern Sporades, with confirmed sightings in Skiathos and Skopelos.”

The organization urges swimmers in affected areas to exercise extreme caution, noting that

“the outbreak is spreading at a much faster rate than expected.”
