Latsco Shipping, one of the leading Greek shipping groups, has placed an order for the construction of 2+2 containerships in China.
Specifically, the company has signed an agreement with Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding for the construction of two container vessels, with an option for two more, each with a capacity of 1,900 TEU. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.
According to international shipbroking sources, the estimated cost per vessel is around $31.8 million, indicating that the ships will likely use conventional fuels equipped with scrubbers, without technical infrastructure for future alternative fuel use.
This move is part of Latsco’s strategy to strengthen its presence in the containership sector, expanding its footprint beyond its traditional focus on tankers and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
Shipping market sources note that this agreement comes at a time of growing demand for small and medium-sized containerships, as flexibility and adaptability on regional routes become increasingly important.
