Greece and Hungary sign the Memorandum of Cooperation on Asylum – Providing expertise in Budapest on illegal immigration

Hungarian authorities are interested in familiarising their services with the new border procedures

Newsroom August 4 01:15

In view of the implementation of the new Pact on Immigration and Asylum and following the official request submitted by the Hungarian authorities to the Ministry of Immigration and Asylum for the provision of expertise in the management of illegal immigration, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation between the two sides was signed in Budapest.

The signing of a bilateral agreement between the two countries was signed in Budapest in February 2008.

In particular, the Hungarian authorities are interested in familiarising their services with the new border procedures, which are expected to be implemented in June 2026 under PACT.

We recall that after the adoption of the Pact on 14 May 2024, all MS are required to comply and adapt their reception and asylum procedures by adopting a homogenised operating model in terms of how to examine applications for international protection, accommodation standards and intensifying the return of those who are not entitled to asylum.

After the Western Balkans, Moldova, Cyprus, Bulgaria and in the past Great Britain, it is the turn of the Hungarians to look for best practices in our country, recognizing the progress that has been made over the years in Greece in the field of migration. The Ministry of Immigration and Asylum was represented by the Secretary General of Migration Policy, Manos Logothetis and the Commander of the Asylum Service, Marios Kaleas.
