Pan-European wave of rallies

Newsroom February 16 09:02

Thousands of anti-austerity supporters from around the world took to the streets on Sunday calling for a “Breath of Dignity” for Greece and showing their solidarity to the cash-strapped Greek people. Protests were held in London, Brussels, Helsinki, Lisbon, Luxemburg, Stockholm, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Zurich, Lausanne, Vienna, Oslo, Riga, Amsterdam, Sophia, Belgrade and a host of other major European cities for the third time this week. The rallies, rather than fizzle are avalanching forth with enthusiasm and gusto.

France

A demonstration of 2,000 people, organized by French leftist factions, was held in Paris between the Place de la Republique and the Place du Palais-Royal. French Communist Party supporters called on people not to pay for the crisis caused by capitalism as a show of solidarity with Greece. Young ecologists were amongst the groups marching in support of Greece. Others included the New Anticapitalist Party (NPA) and Nouvelle Donne.

Another 400 people gathered at Marseille to protest against the EU-IMF’s handling of Greek debt.

Belgium

Hundreds of Greeks and Belgian citizens gathered in Brussels to protest against austerity. A basic speaker at the rally was Manolis Glezos and a number of Belgian unionists. Glezos said that it was “characteristic” that the gathering was outside the stockmarket that was saved by stealing from the Greek nation and other nations.

Austria

Austrians, Greeks and Spaniards gathered in support of Greek positions at the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna. They held banners of solidarity, such as “Je Suis Hellas”, “Stand and Fight”, “Greeks, Your Struggle is Our Struggle” and “An end to austerity”. Greek flags were waved across the Viennese square.

The rally ended with the music of composer Mikis Theodorakis.

Germany

Greek solidarity gatherings took place around Germany with rallies in Berlin, Munich, Weimar, Stuttgart, Cologne and Frankfurt.

Denmark

Despite the shootings, people rallied in the streets of Copenhagen, showing support for Greece.

The U.K.

Campaigners held a solidarity protest for Greece at Trafalgar Square in London that was attended by politicians, trade union leaders and other activists among hundreds supporting Greece’s new leftist government. A separate rally was also held in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Portugal

Events were held in Lisbon, Braga, Porto, Portimao, Faro and Veziou.

Belarus

Despite the rain, people stood outside the House of Europe to express their support to Greeks ahead of the Eurogroup meeting on Monday.

Cyprus

Protestors holding Greek flags protested against the conditions in Greece and their own country in an event organized by the Solidarity Network of Greek Citizens in Cyprus.

The Netherlands

Amsterdam’s beautiful Dam Square was inundated with protestors wearing yellow rubber gloves as a special show of support to the Greek cleaners sacked from the Finance Ministry who have come to symbolize the injustice of Greek debt.
