A major police operation was underway in the central Athens district of Ano Petralona following an armed robbery at a supermarket on Troon Street early Monday morning. Two of the three armed gunmen, reportedly Albanian nationals, entered the store and demanding that employees give them money.
One of the employees alerted the police who arrived before the gunmen fled.
Two of the armed robbers managed to escape, however the police arrested one of the men following a shootout without injuries as he fell from his motorcycle.
The second gunman was located at the Erythros Stavros (Red Cross) hospital after seeking emergency aid for a gunshot wound incurred during the heist.
Reports that there had been a hostage situation were denied, however, it was alleged that one of the robbers took a hostage to the building’s balcony in order to escape. The hostage was later set free.
The area has been closed off in police efforts to locate the last of the three armed robbers.
