The first Saturday of Attica’s 24-hour public transport system operated successfully, with thousands of citizens returning home safely using the metro, tram and buses.

Speaking to ERTNews, Deputy Transportation Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis stressed that the implementation of the road will save several lives, as young people will return home safely.

“It is difficult to prove but absolutely true that from today, and every Saturday, some lives on Greek roads will be saved precisely because workers are making a huge effort so that we now have a 24-hour metro, 24-hour bus lines, and a 24-hour tram every Saturday night. This is why we are doing it: so that especially young people can get home safely on Saturday nights; for their parents, who worry; for every young person who wants to go out in Athens on a Saturday night to have fun and wants a reliable alternative so they don’t have to worry about how they’ll get back,” said Mr. Kyranakis.

For his part, the CEO of STA. SY., Thanasis Kottaras, told ERTNews that “we are very happy for two reasons.”

“Firstly, because for the first time we are implementing the 24-hour Saturday operation in the metro,” and “secondly and most importantly, because tonight thousands of passengers and especially thousands of young people embraced this night operation of metro lines 2 and 3, trams and bus lines.”
