United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio may meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on October 30 in Budapest, according to a report in the Financial Times, citing an unnamed German official.
The same official said there is an “expectation” that Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban will present his plans before Donald Trump meets Vladimir Putin. In this context, the possibility of a separate meeting between European leaders and the US president is also being considered, although nothing has been officially confirmed.
The German official added that both Lavrov and Rubio are expected to arrive in Budapest on October 30.
Commenting on the report, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Tass that Moscow will immediately release information about the meeting as soon as official data is available. At the same time, she called for not giving way to a “communication show.”
It should be noted that, according to Reuters, the meeting between Rubio and Lavrov was originally scheduled for October 23. The Kremlin said that the two foreign ministers will begin preparatory work for the upcoming Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest.
