The School Meals Program officially begins today, offering 231,062 warm, Mediterranean diet–based lunches daily to elementary school students in 1,918 schools across 153 municipalities nationwide, according to the Ministry of Social Cohesion and Family and OPEKA (Organization of Welfare Benefits and Social Solidarity).
For the 2025–2026 school year, the program aims to provide nutritious and balanced meals that not only support children’s health but also promote the values of community, equality, and solidarity.
Minister of Social Cohesion and Family Domna Michailidou emphasized:
“Starting today, 231,062 elementary school students across Greece will enjoy a warm lunch every day. Our goal through this initiative is to support Greek families, the country’s regions, our islands, and areas that are remote or disadvantaged.
We are committed to including more municipalities every year and ensuring that even more children receive high-quality, nutritious meals.
The School Meals Program is a daily act of care by the Government — a foundation for equal opportunities, solidarity, and social cohesion. We are not simply providing food; we are nurturing values and strengthening the social fabric.”
