Meeting Mitsotakis – Tzitzikostas: Greece to secure €80 billion after tough negotiations

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis met with European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas at the Maximos Mansion. The discussions focused on key topics related to the Commissioner’s portfolio

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas, Minister of Shipping and Island Policy Vasilis Kikilias, Minister of Tourism Olga Kefalogianni, and Deputy Minister responsible for Transport Konstantinos Kyranakis.

At the outset of the meeting, Prime Minister Mitsotakis stated:

“Welcome officially, Commissioner. I am pleased we have this opportunity to engage in discussion. We have the chance to have all relevant ministers present, whose portfolios relate to your broad responsibilities.

This is a prime opportunity to hear from you your priorities for the coming year, and to allow our ministers to raise issues requiring better coordination and communication between the European Commission and the Greek government.

Once again, welcome, Apostolos.”

Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas responded:

“Thank you, Mr. Prime Minister. I am truly happy to be here today with all of you, marking nearly one year since I took office at the European Commission, overseeing a portfolio of great significance for our country.

This portfolio covers infrastructure, transport, shipping, tourism, military mobility, and the automotive industry across 27 member states. It is a vital portfolio for Europe, representing roughly 30% of the EU’s GDP, and over 40% of Greece’s GDP.

Over the past year, we have launched numerous legislative initiatives addressing longstanding issues across these sectors.

I want to thank the Greek government, you personally and your ministers, for the excellent collaboration. This portfolio is not only crucial economically but also directly linked to global geopolitical developments. Greece has earned respect and credibility in Europe and is a leading player in many EU-wide policies.

Thanks to constructive cooperation, Greece has successfully secured more than €80 billion in funds during this programming period, following tough negotiations led by the Prime Minister. These funds translate into projects that stimulate growth, create jobs, and improve citizens’ lives.

This partnership between Greece and the European Union embodies Europe in practice — Europe cares for its citizens and is increasingly present in our daily lives and policies.

I must say, I am proud as a Greek Commissioner working in Brussels to continue this close collaboration to provide solutions on matters within my remit.
