The complaint of “Citizen’s Movement Against Neutralization of Syrian Chemical Weapons in the Mediterranean Sea” was forwarded by the Supreme Court Prosecutor to the Athens First Instance Court.
The controversial movement argues that there are violations of international environmental laws as well as Greek laws, since our country fails to exercise the rights that the law providing for environmental endangering gives it, on the Syrian chemicals loads traversing the Mediterranean.
As argued, the plan is to destroy 1000 tons of chemical weaponry found in Syria within the Mediterranean sea.
Also outlined in the legal complaint, there is evidence of criminal liability from acts and omissions of state officials, regarding environmental legislation and responsibilities in view of the risk of pollution in both sea and human environments of the Mediterranean.
Finally, it is noted that since November 2013, there is no official government information about the controversy regarding the chemicals and their disposal.
